  • 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 250 g caster sugar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 200 g buttermilk
  • 100 g olive oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste
  • 200 g red wine
  • 270 g dark chocolate, broken into pieces (approx. 1 cm)

Red wine pears

  • 2 pears (see Tips) cored and cut into thick wedges (approx. 2 cm)
  • 4 tbsp soft dark brown sugar
  • 200 g red wine
  • 200 g whipped cream, to serve (optional)
